24K, 22K, 21K, 18K , What Do These Numbers Really Mean?24
Walk through Dubai Gold Souq on any afternoon and you'll see numbers everywhere: 24K, 22K, 21K, 18K. They appear on jewellery tags, bullion certificates, electronic displays, even tiny stamps inside rings. For first-time buyers, these numbers can feel like a code that everyone but you understands.
The good news is that the system is simple once you know it. Here's everything you need.
What "karat" actually measures
A karat (spelled "carat" outside the gold context) is a unit of gold purity. Pure gold, with nothing added, is 24 karat. That's the maximum, the reference point. Every other karat number tells you the proportion of pure gold mixed with other metals.
The math is straightforward, every karat number is divided by 24 to give you the percentage of gold:
- 24K = 24/24 = 99.9%+ pure gold (the purest form sold commercially)
- 22K = 22/24 = 91.6% pure gold (mostly used in Indian and Bahraini jewellery)
- 21K = 21/24 = 87.5% pure gold (common in Arabic jewellery designs)
- 18K = 18/24 = 75% pure gold (popular in European designs and everyday jewellery)
Why pure gold isn't always best
It sounds counterintuitive, but pure gold is actually too soft for everyday wear. A 24K ring would bend out of shape within months. The other metals mixed into 22K, 21K, and 18K gold aren't impurities, they're deliberate additions called alloys that give the gold strength and durability.
This is why jewellers in the UAE use specific karats for specific purposes:
- 24K is for investment bullion, gold bars and coins that sit safely in a vault, not on your finger
- 22K is the most widely chosen karat for jewellery, rich yellow colour, durable enough for everyday wear, with a very high gold content
- 21K is widely used in Gulf jewellery, slightly more durable than 22K with a near-identical appearance
- 18K is preferred for fine jewellery and stone-set pieces, with excellent durability for daily wear, secure stone settings, and a slightly lighter golden tone that suits modern designs
How to read a hallmark
Every legitimate gold piece sold in the UAE must be hallmarked, a small stamp confirming its purity. On bullion bars, look at the front face for stamps like:
- "999.9" or "9999", this is 24K, expressed as parts per thousand
- "916", this is 22K (91.6% pure)
- "875", this is 21K
- "750", this is 18K
On jewellery, the karat is often stamped inside the band (for rings), on the clasp (for necklaces), or on a small tag attached to the piece. If you can't see a stamp, ask the seller to show you. A reputable dealer will point it out without hesitation.
What this means for your money
Here's the bottom line: karat directly affects price per gram. A 1 gram piece of 24K gold costs more than 1 gram of 22K gold, simply because there's more gold inside it.
At today's rates, the per-gram difference between 24K and 22K is roughly 8 percent. For a 50 gram piece, that's hundreds of dirhams. When you compare prices at different shops, always make sure you're comparing the same karat. A "cheaper" 21K bracelet is not actually cheaper than a 22K one if you're paying the same per-gram rate.
One more thing: VAT
In the UAE, investment-grade gold (99.5% pure or higher) is VAT-free. That means 24K bullion bars and coins carry zero VAT. Jewellery, including 22K and 21K, is subject to 5% VAT on the making charges (not the gold itself). This is one of the practical reasons many investors choose pure bullion over jewellery for wealth preservation.
